Residents in Fergleen area of Galliagh have expressed their relief after two derelict homes which had become a hive of anti-social activity in recent months were finally torn down.

The Derry News reported last week how the North West Housing Association – who own both the properties at 44 and 45 Fergleen Park – had earmarked both houses for demolition.

The Department of Social Development duly signed off on the priority request, with builders moving in on Thursday to level the buildings.

Both properties – and an already demolished adjoining community office – had been the target of an arson attack in October 2007.

Since then the properties have attracted large gangs of youths who regularly convened on the area for late night drinking sessions.

Families living in nearby properties also expressed concerns about the children’s safety after one young girl narrowly avoided serious injury after gaining access to one of the derelict properties.

It’s now hoped that the removal of the properties will go some way to reducing anti-social activity at the site.

Plans have already been drafted for a number of houses and bungalows in the area, work on which is expected to begin in a year’s time.
