Accused of exposing himself to children

June 23rd, 2009

A 33-year-old man has been remanded in custody accused of indecently exposing himself to primary school children in Eglinton last week.
Adam Carroll who normally resides in London had been over staying with his mother last Tuesday when the incident alleged occurred.
Police were contacted shortly after 8.30am after two girls from primary six reported seeing the defendant exposing himself inside a house.
They were on there way to school and stated they had observed him standing in front of a window.
The defendant was arrested and denied the offence. Statements were then obtained from the children.
Police were then called to the same address in the village that night after a report of a male masterbating in the garden in view of the road.
Four male pedestrians walked past the property and each time the male turned away.
When police spoke to the defendant about using indecent behaviour he replied: “Yes, I am ashamed.”
Police objected to bail on the grounds no suitable address had been found for the defendant.
A police sergeant stated they had serious concerns about him returning to his mother’s house due to the nature of the offences.
He added the defendant had a flat in London but further inquiries would need to be made regarding it.
Defence solicitor Leoni Breslin stated her client had serious psychological difficulties and was someone who needed help.
She added that the defendant had previously been living with his brother in London and could go back there if he was released.
District judge Barney McElholm stated he was remanding the defendant in custody for his own safety.
“Unfortunately too many people in this country take the law into their own hands.”
He continued he would not consider releasing the defendant to his mother’s house in Eglinton.
The case was adjourned until June 25 via video link for police for inquiries to be made about the address proffered in London.
