Charity scores Christmas GOAL

Posted online: Dec 28th, 2009

SCORES of people from throughout the northwest braved the continuing cold snap to complete the GOAL Mile on St. Stephen’s Day.
Now in its 28th year, the event saw families turn up at Sainsbury’s Car Park at 12 noon to partake in the walk along the river, which saw children complete the challenge in their bikes, trikes and skateboards.
The first GOAL mile in Derry five years ago was organised by Sister Bernadine, who at the time was principal of Nazareth House Primary School, and has since retired to become Reverend Mother of Nazareth House in Sligo.
Commenting on the event, local GP and one of the event organisers is Dr Lee Casey explained that the GOAL Mile was a great opportunity for families to stretch their legs after Christmas Day.
“It’s a great way to get out and do some exercise; the children can try out some of the bikes, trikes, skateboards and roller skates left by Santa but most importantly of all, it’s all in a good cause to help raise money and awareness for GOAL’s work in the developing world,” he explained.
“Over the past few years, the GOAL mile in Derry has developed into a real social event. After all the rushing about leading up to Christmas, it’s a great opportunity for people to relax and unwind.”
