An 8-year-old boy was being treated in Altnagelvin Hospital last night after he was found semi-conscious in sub-zero temperatures yesterday morning in Derry.
The boy was discovered outside a shop in Ballymagroarty shortly after 6.30am, wearing just a t-shirt.
He was found by a passing taxi man who yesterday told the Derry News that he believed the little boy was close to death when he found him.
“I’m no medical expert, but if it had been another half an hour before he was found then I’m sure he’d have been dead,” the taxi driver said.
Both the police and social services have launched investigations into the incident which has shocked the people of Derry.
The PSNI said they have been in contact with the boy’s mother and are trying to establish how a child of his age would be lying on the streets in such horrific weather.
