TRADERS in Derry’s city centre were left without power yesterday after an underground cable was cut – the FOURTH time this has happened in as many weeks.
Waterloo Street, where all the problems have originated, is undergoing extensive work as part of the public realm scheme to transform the city centre.
However, retailers in the area, who were without electricity for 45 minutes yesterday, say the constant cuts are making their lives a ‘nightmare’.
Martin Tierney, of Riviera Sunbeds, said the problem has got so bad he is considering relocating to out-of-town premises.
“We had to ask all our customers to leave as obviously in our line of business you can’t do much without electricity.
“This has been happening once a week for about a month now and we’re getting really fed up with it.
“Things are hard enough for small city centres without having to put with this.
“I’m thinking of relocating my store to Springtown if this keeps up.
“Nobody came to us to talk about this, but if it keeps up it’s going to put people out of business,” said Mr Tierney.
