CUSTOMERS at a Derry bar have been told that £24,000 collected for a World Cup draw has gone missing.
Ninety six customers of The Phoenix Bar in Rosemount forked out £250 a head for the draw, which had been scheduled to take place at the pub yesterday.
However, it is understood that punters were told last week that the draw had been cancelled because the money, which they saved over the last two years, had disappeared.
The Derry News understands that the person charged with collecting the money is being held responsible for the missing cash.
Several customers of the bar contacted the Derry News at the weekend after being told that their money was gone.
One Rosemount man – who did not wish to be named – explained that both he and his son had lost a total of £500.
“We’ve been handing in this money for the past two years and we were really looking forward to the draw,” he said.
“We were all looking forward to going down there on Sunday for all the craic of the draw but that’s done with now.
“So it’s a while kick in the teeth for everyone.
“One family I know of lost a thousand pound as there was four of them in for it.
“The thing that people are most angry about is that the fella collecting the cash was still taking money off people last Saturday.
“He was even telling the bar staff that they had better pay up.”
He added that the World Cup had now been spoiled for everyone involved in the draw.
“It would have been great to have been given a team and be able to watch the World Cup with a bit of excitement about the draw,” he continued.
“But that’s not going to happen now.”
It is understood that PSNI are now involved in the matter.
