World Cup windfall for Foyle hospice

A Derry man with a heart of gold has donated his entire £2,300 World Cup winnings to the Foyle Hospice.
The regular at the Bentley Bar does not want to reveal his identity and wants no recognition for his noble contribution.
However, The Bentley Bar proprietor, Tony O’Connor, said he could not let such a deed go unnoticed or without a word of thanks.
Tony told the Derry News how, when collections for the World Cup draw began two years ago, the philanthropic mystery man vowed to give any winnings he may scoop straight to the Foyle Hospice.
“When we started collecting the money for the World Cup draw back in November ’08, he said that no matter who he got, if he won anything he would give it all to the Foyle Hospice,” he said.
“We were collecting £3 a man for two years and then when it came to it, he got Spain. There were only a few of us knew what he planned to do and when Spain got to the final he still stuck by his guns.
“He came up to me that night and said, ‘What I said still stands, if Spain win it’s all going to the hospice.’”
Tony said the man who had drawn Holland did not know about the generous plan and approached the big-hearted man to split the winnings.
“He told him no because he had other plans for it,” he said.
“The winnings turned out to be £2,300; we are holding another draw now for the European Championsip and it’s £300 a man so we suggested to him that we’d keep back the £300 and he could give the £2,000 to the Hospice but he was having none of it.
“He wanted every penny to go to the Foyle Hospice and it did. Fair play to him!”
